Watercolor Rocks! with Kristi Grussendorf
"Success, for me, is when my painting goes out & has its own relationship & conversation with the viewer. Because watercolor is my medium of choice, I’ve learned to be comfortable with the unexpected and to celebrate the unique & magical characteristics of the medium. As I see it, my job is simple - keep learning the visual language techniques, practice my observational skills & keep painting. I have found my preference for “interesting” & “authentic” over “accurate” to be shared by many!"
Kristi doesn’t remember a time without art. Her mother earned her degree in art & also taught so it was something that was valued & encouraged at home. Kristi graduated with a BFA (painting & drawing emphasis) from the University of Utah & was privileged to learn from many of Utah’s most famous & talented artists/instructors. While attending the university she acquired several pieces from professors by trading student work and was selected on scholarship to attend Ed Maryon's Monterey Bay watercolor workshop. Also, as a recovering "workshop junkie," she has had the opportunity to study with numerous current masters of the watercolor medium. She has been included in several national & international publications, was privileged to be part of the 2016 PACE (Plein Air Convention & Expo) faculty in Tucson, AZ and has led plein air workshops in both Spain & France. She is a rostered instructor for the Utah Division of Arts & Museums, enjoys teaching workshops, doing demonstrations & judging exhibitions. Her painting "Magdalene's..." (bottom picture) was purchased for the Sears Art Museum's permanent collection at Dixie State University.
Although she got her start in oils, Kristi is currently focused on watercolor. The transparency of watercolor produces a freshness & purity of color unequaled in other mediums & she strives to preserve the white of the paper in order to paint in a truly purist way. On that note, Kristi’s "London Mass Transit" was awarded the prestigious "Director's Award" at the 2014 Transparent Watercolor Society of America Annual Exhibition. “Watercolor truly keeps me humble. I have to keep reminding myself that I have a relationship WITH watercolor & refrain from trying to control it. Often, my most successful results occur when I’m able to stay out of the way.”
